I initially wrote about this film in April, when it made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival. It’s high contrast black and white cinematography, music, and seemingly intriguing storyline caught my interest from the moment I saw the trailer.
In celebration of the Halloween holiday…
I had no idea he had any aspiration to direct – much less a hip-hop music video. He apparently previously directed Ben Harper’s video for Morning Yearning, and reportedly hoped to direct an adaptation of a novel titled The Queen’s Gambit, about a young female chess prodigy.
Quite a bit of casting news today it seems. See my previous 2 posts today on Don Cheadle and Method Man…
If anything, you’ve gotta love her energy!! Good for her!
From a Production Weekly Tweet (you gotta love Twitter)… raptor Method Man will star in Gareth Maxwell Roberts‘ The Mortician – described as an independent Digital 3D “gritty gangster film,” currently in pre-production in Louisiana. Production will fall under Brit’s Full Circle Films, who say the project will be “technologically innovative and creatively groundbreaking.”
This Is It as a “Best Picture” Oscar nomination? Apparently, Sony, the distributor, thinks so.
This seems to have come out of nowhere…
Lee Daniels, Oprah, Tyler Perry, Mo’Nique, Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carey, et al seem to all have had their say on the film, however, we really haven’t heard much from the author of the book that the film is based on… until now!
No surprise, right? A 3rd installment in the series has long been rumored to be a possibility, and not, via The Hollywood Reporter, we now have confirmation, with Sony said to be planning for a spring 2010 production start date.
While I’m analyzing trailers (see my Avatar examination which I posted earlier today HERE)…
Variety reports that the Michael Jackson’s concert film This Is It grossed $20.1 million worldwide opening day giving it an impressive start, though no one is saying right now what they expect the first weekend numbers will be until all the votes are counted. Sony Pictures opened the film in 99 territories with another 10 [...]
Brit thespian Idris Elba will be returning to television, as the executive producer of a new legal drama for NBC.
A teaser preview of The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty – a new reality show coming to A&E television. h/t THELIFEFILES
Courtesy of Humor Mill TV, Rick James’ daughter Ty James discusses her Dad, the film about life that’s in the works, and she also hints at who’s in talks to play Rick James in the lead role; she gives the initials T.H., claiming that he’s a well-known actor. I couldn’t immediately think of a black [...]
The year is 1992, Spike Lee just completed Malcolm X, and in the below interview, he expresses his frustrations with Hollywood’s indifference to black cinema, stating that racism is partly to blame.
This was recorded earlier this year in May – Spike Lee’s 20-minute conversation with Ed Gordon, which was taped in front of a live audience at the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference in Detroit, Michigan. It was within this discussion that Spike’s now infamous critiques of Tyler Perry were uttered by the man himself. But the [...]
I can practically guarantee that every reader on our site, no matter where in the world they may be, has heard of Sophia Stewart at least once in their lives. If the name escapes you at the moment, this should refresh your memory… she’s the woman who won a major million dollar copyright infringement suit [...]
Yes, it’s all a publicity stunt to help draw attention to the iTunes release of their short film collab, We Were Once A Fairytale; but, I’m sure we’ve all likely wanted to do this to Kanye once or twice in the past (Has anyone actually paid the $2.99 to buy the film? I [...]
Recall the horrible Photoshop job that was the film’s poster, unveiled a month ago; Thankfully, these images from the film don’t look as unflattering. The film hits theatres February 2010.
For those out there born well past the glory days of the blaxplotation film and those like me who lived it, you’ll soon have your chance to see for yourself what all the fuss was about. Warner Home Video has recently announced that they’re releasing their Urban Action Collection DVD set, a collection of four [...]
Today, Michael Jackson’s This Is It begins its limited two-week engagement. Is it on your “to-see” list? Have you seen it? Thoughts?
We’ve previously wondered what Gabourey Sidibe’s post-Precious prospects in the biz are, given that she doesn’t fit Hollywood’s apparent preferred physical type, and whether Precious might indeed be the highlight of her career, even though she’s just 24-years old.
I knew MTV traveled, but I don’t think I was aware that they held an annual awards ceremony in specific African countries. Last year, the year the MAMAs was established, the celebration took place in Abuja, Nigeria. This year, it took place in Nairobi, Kenya, with Wyclef Jean assuming hosting duties.
Tambay has previously touched on this subject before, but with the release of Precious any day now, and the buzz it’s getting now as the Oscars’ (white guilt) shoo-in for nominations, maybe we ought to revisit the issue, especially after long-time industry journalist and insider, Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood, commented about this today on [...]
