Watch Now – Not Tall Enough (Barry Jenkins’ Next Film)

Picture 4

In June, I wrote about Barry Jenkins’ involvement in the Bloomingdales filmmaking initiative, the BFLix project – essentially 5 short films from 5 emerging directors, centered on the upscale American department store chain owned by Macy’s. You can read that initial post HERE to refresh your memory.

Well… after much anticipation, all 5 films are complete, and are now available for viewing. I just watched Barry’s, titled, Tall Enough, and it has some of the trademarks that made Medicine For Melancholy (Barry’s first feature) a success; lovely cinematography, use of music and overall sound, a hint of “quirk,” as well as a fluidity in the performances, and a deceptive simplicity to it all.

It’s really a beautiful short, and I encourage you to watch it, and VOTE for Barry. Your vote will send the winner of the 5 filmmakers to the Independent Spirit Awards next year; and, at the moment, Barry’s film is in last place!!

    Beautiful, simply put :)

You know what? I’ve always marveled at the fact that he incorporated silence & music in the forefront to tell the story, just as much as the actors, writers, photographers and the rest who contributed did.

Its not something you see everyday in films nowadays, now music is either treated as a noise or an unnecessary form of distraction from silence.

Both could be simple and subtle,,,yet quite effective to tell a story. I think he mastered the connection between these 2 and the visual.

This film demonstrates how clearly social constructions affect only daily lives when we don’t fully understand them.

It’s great to see a film question those beliefs
