Glover’s Toussaint L’Ouverture Movie Trailers…?

Toussaint

A friend posted the third trailer below on Facebook and I wondered if it might be the trailer for Danny Glover’s long awaited film, Toussaint, about the 18th centuray Haitian revolutionary, Toussaint L’Ouverture, which currently has an unspecified 2010 release date.

On viewing it, however, it seems it might be more of a documentary than the action epic that Toussaint promises to be. So then I thought that perhaps the four trailers are from the documentary on the making of Toussaint, produced by Glover’s Louverture Films, simply entitled The Making of TOUSSAINT and directed by Michèle Stephenson & Joe Brewster which, according to its brief synopsis on the Louverture Films website is a:

Documentary film about the making of TOUSSAINT, situating the places and events in the feature film within historical and current Haitian realities. Examines past efforts to tell the story and includes in-depth interviews with the director, actors, writers and producers of TOUSSAINT, as well as experts in various fields pertaining to Haitian history.

However, the website gives little more away than the above, no links to trailers or anything, so I’m none the wiser.

If anyone else knows more about the context of these mystery trailers, then feel free to share.

  • Hmmm… I’ll bet these are just “fanboy” creations and not connected to any specific movie, fiction of doc.

But I sent a message to the creator, via YouTube, asking about them. If I get a response, I’ll certainly post it here.

Glover’s pic isn’t even in production yet. I keep tracking the web for anything that comes up about it, and, so far, the most promising report, dated June 2009, states that is to start Glover did raise the necessary funds, courtesy of Hugo Chavez, and shooting is set to begin next year in Venezuela, starring Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. But I don’t know how accurate all that is, because I found another article in which Cheadle said he wasn’t attached to the project.

If this ever gets made, I’ll be surprised. I really do think it’s unfortunate that Glover can’t get the money he needs with the assistance of black investors. To my knowledge, he’s trying to raise anywhere from $18 to $30 million, which, quite frankly, isn’t much. It’s below the industry average.

i cannot wait to see that movie, i think this will open that door that is closed for so long time. and i like the idea, when he proposed the movie and the project the island. i think he did not hit too many people with it. i jus read a bout it and i would love to contribute some how. Many people dont understand the importance of such event. he just have to try to reach those that dont care at all. there are millions of them. i will keep track on this….

Dr. yves j jerome wrote on the General as commented on in may 79 of Ebony. He would have summized that this industry battle to give America another Hero that they don’t want to see or acknowledge is very much in line with Toussaint’s spirit in which he fought for freedom…True Haitian drama! Hold on to your Rice and Beans folks…..

I would have loved to see a movie based on a story of this magnitude played by a cast of very high profile actors. I can’t wait to see it and hope that D. Glover does a spectacular job.

Another story I think should be made in a movie is that of General Alexandre Dumas, AKA the “Black Devil” in Europe. Another fascinating story!

  • I’m just now seeing this post. I know they were making a documentary but I don’t recall anything official coming out about the feature film. At one time Jonathan Rhys Meyers was set to play Napoleon (I believe) but on IMDB, Toussaint is taken off his filmography page, so who knows.

As far as we know, Glover’s project is dead. There were a lot of politics and PR challenges that played into that project’s current demise. And, most of the actors who attached themselves to the project when it was in development have since exited. Perhaps Glover’s ambitions for portraying Toussaint will be realized at a later date. But for now, Pictures for Eula Mae is now developing a biopic of Toussaint based upon its award-winning short film “The Last Days of Toussaint L’Ouverture.” You can see a clip of it at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2468184/ The film first was released in Anaheim, CA at the MUZEO museum’s Napoleon exhibit in November 2009 as part of the museum’s “Treasures of Napoleon” exhibit (which, by the way, is an extraordinary exhibit). There was investor interest from that screening, and a feature script is now underway. However, this new feature is not yet listed in IMDb.com. Mircea Bumbesti is writing the feature. And Black Filmmaker Derick Alexander will direct.
