Should Mo’Nique shape up?
What I’m referring to is the possibility of Mo’Nique blowing her chances for getting a nomination, due to her lack of co-operation to promote the film, demanding cash money up front for any appearances. The people invloved with the film and Lionsgate know all-too well that they need to present a visible, unified front to gain support. To have one of the most important people invloved in the film missing because of money issues does not look good to Oscar voters. The fact is that, Mo’Nqiue has a well known rep in the business for being hard to work with, and just deal with in general (One friend who recently saw Precious and who has crossed paths with her in the past, half-jokingly said that her character in the film was only a “slightly” exaggerated portrayal on Mo’Nique in real life)
Now, of course there are those who say why should it matter what a person is like in real life? It’s the performance that counts. Well that was true in the olden days, but not anymore. Being a very competitive business it’s not enough to have an Oscar-worthy performance. You have to let the voters know that you’re grateful, humbled and most importantly, 1) be someone well-liked in the business, and 2) hustle your ass off for the award. You have to campaign for it for months. That’s what Forest Whitaker did for his Oscar for The Last King of Scotland. That guy hustled to get that award, schoomzing, going to every lousy Oscar party and reception, glad-handing anyone with even the most remote connection to an Oscar voter, and practically doing handstands to get that award. Jennifer Hudson was fortunate enough to have people to guide her to help her do the same thing. And it also helped a lot that Whitaker is extremely well-liked in the business, a professional’s professional, and considered one of the nicest guys around. In an industry filled with a–holes, that’s something that stands out. Look at Precious’ director Lee Daniels. He’s cut off his hair, and lately in interviews, and in public, he’s been a lot more toned down and less outrageous than he has been in the past. People in the industry say that he’s clearly cleaning up his act to be “Oscar ready and presentable”. Once that ordeal is over he can go back being his crazy self. If Mo’Nique really wants that nomination, then she needs to get out there, and let people know she wants it. Be nice, schmooze, shake hands, do the talk-show circuit (not just her own), and play “the game” in other words. Afterwards she can go back to being her usual self. 7 comments to Should Mo’Nique shape up? |

Monique is obnoxious, loud and over rated. If she wants to be presentable for anything, she needs to push further from the dinner table and shave them mammoth legs of hers.
Orerrated? Outside of her audience, who really likes Mo’Nique?
If Mo’Nique wants to blow herself up career wise, then who should care besides her? At this point, no one thinks she hasn’t heard that she needs to calm down? She probably has FU money anyway, so if people start flat out refusing to work with her, then she can go off in some corner.
I really don’t care, because honestly, until Precious, I didn’t care much about her as an actress or a comedian.
I watched Shadowboxer last night. I was surprised to discover Mo’Nique worked with Lee Daniels before. She actually plays a character named Precious in the film, screwed up, drug addict black nurse with a baby white boyfriend doctor. The movie is a dysfunctional trip. I kind of liked it and totally understand why Daniels had to make Precious.. Maybe Mo’Nique is annoyed now. She’s going for a new image. How do you talk about being that mother character.. and is an Oscar really that important..
When men are testy and unreasonable, no one campaigns to make them more presentable to receive awards. I’ve read all the bullshit about Mo’Nique, and as you stated Sergio, she had a diva attitude way before PRECIOUS. And, so what? Why is there this expectation that suddenly she’s going to be nice? I kinda like her bravado. It works. She was syrupy-sweet on the Oprah show the other day. It’s was totally unbecoming. Mo’Nique is better, bitchy.

On the countary Sean Penn, who’s considered a jerk by many in the business, did a major image makeover this year for voters in order to better his chances to get an Oscar for Milk and it worked.
WOW! With all the tornado of buzz around this film I can’t wait to go see it!
Reality or not, the language of this–basically saying these actors need to bow and scrape and be good niggas for the Oscar-massa–is disturbing. Yes, I know the white ones do it, too, but come on, it’s really appalling to contemplate. I’d rather she offend everyone.
And seriously, what good is an Oscar, anyway? It doesn’t even result in interesting subsequent projects. The only interesting work Cuba Gooding, Jr., did after his Oscar was with Lee Daniels in Shadowboxer–Mo’Nique’s already been there, done that, and I doubt that’s her intended career trajectory, anyway.
