Box Office 11/6/09 To 11/8/09 (”Precious” Impresses)The top 10 films are listed below; I’ve only seen 3 of of them (Michael Jackson’s This Is It, The Fourth Kind, and Where The Wild Things Are), and can only recommend Michael Jackson’s This Is It. But, who am I kidding – everyone wants to know how Precious did, right? While it didn’t make the top 10 (it only opened on 18 screens nationwide), it performed EXCEPTIONALLY well, all things considered. The film mustered up $1.8 Million in total box office for the weekend, which may not mean much until you look at the per screen average – $100,000 per! I didn’t do any research, but I believe that’s a per screen record. No other film opening this weekend came anywhere close to that number. Next weekend will be a better indicator of just how well the film will do overall, when it opens wide across the country. The hope is that this weekend’s success will carry over!
Here are the rest of the numbers (cume in parentheses): 1 A Christmas Carol $31,000,000 ($31,000,000)

According to indieWIRE, the record for best per-screen average on opening weekend still holds for “Dreamgirls”, followed by “Brokeback Mountain”, but considering that those films opened in 3 and 5 theaters respectively, the Precious numbers are still impressive (on top of the fact that it’s 18 theaters throughout only 4 cities).
I still feel that Lionsgate should have opened the film wider, given that this film has been buzzing since Sundance, but hey, I guess you have to tease it up when you’re trying to get attention during awards season.
