“Sheneneh And Wanda,” The Movie – It Really Is Coming… Unfortunately!

Heaven help us all…! Really!?!

Recall my speculative post on this about a month ago… well, it’s no longer speculation! This is actually going to happen! Really… it is.

As I stated then, in an interview with Hollywood.com, Jamie Foxx revealed his desire to return to his comedic roots after starring in a host of dramas since his Oscar-winning performance in RayThe Kingdom, Dreamgirls, The Soloist, and currently, Law Abiding Citizen with Gerard Butler.

Back in June he and Martin Lawrence made a trailer for a fake movie called Skank Robbers, starring their drag alter-egos: Wanda (from In Living Color) and Sheneneh (from Martin). It aired during the BET Awards ceremony, and even though it was made in jest, audiences really went for it, giving the duo the impetus to go ahead with a real movie based on those 2 fictional characters.

Well… today, Variety reports that Sony’s Screen Gems has acquired Sheneneh and Wanda, a comic vehicle for Foxx and Lawrence to star in – described as a comic caper film, featuring the two ghetto fabulous “ladies,” trying to make it on their own, as a pair of bank robbers, as we saw in the BET Awards skit.

Foxx will write the script, and he and Martin will produce together through Foxx’s Foxxhole and Lawrence’s Runteldat production banners.

As I said a month ago, this has to be one of the most RIDICULOUS ideas… completely absurd and insulting! Shame on both gentlemen for actually thinking this would be a good idea for a feature film. The characters MAY have worked in short comedic skits, but in a 90+ minute feature-length film? Are you serious Jamie?

It’s rather unfortunate that some of the more popular portrayals of black women on screen are created, controlled and played by black men! From Eddie Murphy, to Martin Lawrence, to Tyler Perry, to Jamie Foxx, and even Lee Daniels, and whoever else I’m forgetting. And let’s not forget, while they aren’t portraying black women, the Wayans brothers are certainly contributing to the drag-athon with White Chicks and now White Chicks 2 in the works. But what’s really mind-boggling is that the audiences for these films are very often those same black women who are being lampooned! I don’t get it!

The contemporary dominant faces of black women on film seem to be: the buffoonish caricature portrayed by black men in drag, or women who are near-drowning in Negro miserablism.

And I won’t at all be surprised if Sheneneh And Wanda, the movie, is a box office hit! As JoBlo reports, Screen Gems is putting the project on the proverbial fast-track, meaning, expect to see the boys in drag at a theatre near you sooner than later.

*Shaking my head* I challenge anyone to convince me into believing that this is actually a good idea.

You didn’t see the fake movie trailer that aired during the BET Awards in June? Well, you’re in luck, because I’ve embedded it below:

Beat me again in posting this. As you can guess I’m absolutely THRILLED about the project.

P.S. Just when exactly did black men lose their balls in Hollywood?

  • I really, really don’t know how to feel about this one. On the one hand, it looks absolutely hilarious. And on the other, it looks like some abject foolishness. Oh will. Everyone needs a good laugh every now and then. I guess I’ll have to check it out, but I refuse to pay full price.

I’m shaking my head, I wonder will Jamie have the nerve to say . . . bought to you by Oscar Winner Jamie Foxx! Ridiculous!

  • As shameful as it is, there were more laughs in this 2 minute fake trailer, than the whole hour of the Wanda Sykes show. That says a lot but yeah, really Jamie?

  • Flowjoe

PLease people..it’s just comedy. WHy do black people think they are the only people who cannot be/do BAD things in film or lampoon or laugh at themselves?? Relax.it’s just comedy and the BROTHERS WILL BE dividing the MONEY!!!!!

    • @ Flowjoe,

I can’t speak for others but from my view, it’s not that I feel Jamie and Martin have no right (or shouldn’t) make these kinds of films; it’s just that I expect more from them. At the level they are in Hollywood, you’d think they’d use the little clout they have to come with something fresh. It’s about having a broader portrayal of blacks in a variety of films. How many times have we seen this? They are not reinventing the wheel here.

    • No Flowjoe, this has nothing to do with black people feeling like they can’t “be/do BAD things in film or lampoon or laugh at themselves,” as you put it.

This is just a dumb, DUMB idea! And to dismiss it as “just comedy,” ignoring every other point made, is careless.

Um, they are giving the people what they want. After they did that skit for the awards show, a lot of people were asking me if it was real and if so when was it coming out because they would be first in line to see it.

So I’m sure they were both getting a lot of feedback and some Hollywood players were probably seeing a lot of dollar signs. Voila!

  • JEREMIAH JAHI

This is straight JUNK! I am insulted by the clip. This is the best they can come up with? Wow!

  • Serg, to keep it simple-Black men started losing their balls in Hollywood when they started tucking them in to get a part….lol. Shame…

  • It’s not time yet for us to get comfortable with this type of content. We’re still in need of boundaries being broke. Western Minorities range of content in cinema is still slim compared to non-minority content in cinema. Our audience is way too comfortable with “cinematic (s)craps” of art that we haven’t entered a true renaissance equal to french cinema for example. It’s long overdo and i feel as if a film like this is a stone-aged distraction from progression. Why do we let them keep us in place so easily?

I actually thought this trailer was funny all three times I viewed it. I predict it’ll make a cabillion dollars at the box office. I’ve said all I will about the exploitation of black women in film. (Not really. Just too tired to rant.)

  • Lawrence and Foxx saw Tyler Perry making millions. They just want in on the demographics that consume these exploits. During this recession I almost can’t hate.

  • mike

This would be so funny . I’m sure they make a ton of money off that movie I would pay to see it.
