Watch Now – “Kindred” Episode 1 (Web Series)
And we’re off… I was supposed to attend the show’s launch party over the weekend, but I missed it. However, I’m sure it was a success for all! The ladies of SistaPAC Productions have unveiled the premiere episode of their new web series, Kindred, which I previously profiled on this blog. Now, the time has come for you to enter the world of Kindred – featuring three twenty-something African-American women as they navigate family, work and love against the gritty skyline of New York City. Share your thoughts below. And please be constructive… Here ya go:

Ok be constructive . . . . let’s start with the timing . . .the women are meeting after work . . . but then they are going to meet for cocktails? You can see that the restaurant is empty besides them. It needs to make sence . . . the writing needs to improve.
The pharmaceutical Rep is dressed like she works in fashion . . .her wardrobe needs to fall in line . . . unless its going to become a story line.
The acting of the older characters was cool, but the younger characters sounded like they were just saying lines. It’s the first episode . . . so hopefully that will improve. The Casting of guest stars and under fives needs to improve.
If they are going to feature local businesses . . they may want to portray them as they are in reality . . . waiters and waitresses should be wearing what they would wear in reality at that restaurant, if the restaurant is to remain nameless . . . then do what you want.
Need better familiarity with characters careers . . . pharmaceutical sales reps make a lot of cash . . . not likely they will be bragging about a shoe that cost $200 and change . . . it’s New York . . . is the audience suppose to be impressed . . . the spouting of a brand name would have been better choice.
The women look like they are all totally different ages . . . and only one reads 20’s to me.
The score . . needs work.
Overall, it needs work, I would watch maybe another episode if it didn’t improve by then . . . I wouldn’t watch anymore.
Performances were a little contrived and weak. The waitress had TOO MUCH attitude to the point that it was unbelievable. And if so, those women would have left. Again, contrived.
Need more coverage. Especially at the restaurant. For example, we only saw a profile shot of the the woman with the scarf on her head. No MS, MCU or CU?
Pretty decent lighting and it looks like they shot on a good HD camera.
They need to re-mix their sound. Could barely hear the doctor for example. Some other audio was way to loud.
Good first effort but the actors need to rehearse more. They seemed like they were rushing through their lines and not being the characters. The cop’s performances sucked.
Lastly, the script needs work. Even in ten minutes, we didn’t get a good introduction of who these people are and that is very important for any type of series.
Overall grade for Episode 1 for me is a B-
Hmm… Wanting to like this, but not really being helped by this episode. In all fairness I only watched the first 6 minutes or so because I wasn’t sure where it was going and had no particularl reason to care (sorry, being black while watching is not reason enough for me these days).
It starts with a Sex And The City style voice-over and the coffees shop scene… except I’m not sure who the voice belonged to. The opening scene introduced me to three people lacking in any distinctive characterisation and I’d guess from that scene that the show was going to be more about style over substance.
But then on to the next scene where it becomes a cliched cop drama, followed by another scene from a cliched medical drama…
I don’t know who the characters are and what their relationships to each other are and with no hook reeling me in, I’m not entirely sure I’d return to find out. I think they may have gone into production a little too soon and should have spent a little more time on developing the the script/storylines/characters…
I’m definitely open to watching the second episode. I’m interested to find out more about the characters and the mild drama that seems to be building.
The visual is good. Very professional. This one could be a winner. Let’s see.
This thing has a lot of issues. It seems like they have internalized all of the negative stereotypes of black women and are going out of their way to promote those stereotypes. Angry, violent, and hypersexual, they refer to each other as bitches and whores while cursing in almost every line. The camera focuses on the ass of the waitress as she walks away in her short skirt and we hear on of the other female characters call her a skanky hoe.
I don’t mind cursing or attitude, but I think this was done in bad taste. If you’re going to tread in that familiar territory of negative stereotypes you need to be able to successfully subvert or transcend those stereotypes and I don’t think they have what it takes to do that at this point.
The cinematography is actually good in this film…the acting and script I’m sorry is pretty weak…there is something about it that seems contrived and unnatural…I think that the script is written like one of those black arabesque love books, you know like ” coffee will make your sugar black” you know those cheesy lil books..I am not trying to shit on this though..its just unbelievable and… sorry…maybe the show would be better with an imporv group that does not have a script, so that the lines can come off more natural..Sorry
