Beginning today, Friday, November 27th, 2009, is the New York African Diaspora Film Festival, arguably one of the better black film festivals in the country. At the festival, run by husband and wife team, Diarah N’Daw-Spech and her husband Reinaldo Barroso-Spech, you’re certain to find an eclectic group of urban, classic, independent and foreign films that depict the richness and diversity of the life experience of people of African descent and Indigenous people all over the world – hence it’s title.

From today through December 15th, 101 feature and short films will be screened.

Thankfully, I’ve been granted a press pass to attend the screenings, and interview the filmmakers, so I’ll be providing some coverage of the festival over the next 2 1/2 weeks, as my schedule permits. If you live in New York, or will be here any time from now through December 15th, be sure to allocate some time to check out a film or two – a few films that you may never get to see otherwise.

Of note – this year’s South African entry for “Best Foreign Film” Oscar consideration, White Wedding (its New York premiere), and Rashaad Ernesto Green’s multiple award-winning short film, Premature.

We’ve already covered a few films that will screen at the festival – Dreams Deferred: The Sakia Gunn Project, Up From The Bottoms, & When the City Bites.
