The breakout star of Invictus?

Already the Clint Eastwood film Invictus with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela is being screened and the raves are coming in with everyone saying that Freeman is an obvious shoo-in not only for an Oscar nomination but also to win. However quite a few are saying that the breakout star in the film is going to be South African actor Tony Kgoroge, who plays the major supporting role in the film of Jason Tshabalala, who was Mandela’s head of security. The word is that he is simply terrific and gives a complex, multi-layered performance with real depth and that insiders are talking up Kgoroge more than Freeman and Damon. One can only hope that Kgoroge, who’s appeared in Hotel Rwanda, Blood Diamond, Skin and several others, won’t fall into the trap of the “Quick we need an African for this part” casting problem that Djimon Hounsou got caught in.
Nice to hear this about Kgoroge. Dude caught my eye even before “Hotel Rwanda.”
He was part of the ensemble cast for a South African cop drama called “Zero Tolerance” (inspired, in part, by the U.S. series “Homicide: Life on the Street,” which was quite popular in S.A.).
Click here to see a clip from “Zero Tolerance.” Won’t take you long to notice that Kgoroge really pops on screen.
Yo “The Wire”, you’re a good show and all, and imma let you finish, but I just gotta say that “Homicide: Life On The Street” is the greatest TV show of all time.
Homicide was really good (that is until Andre Braugher left the show and then it really “jumped the shark”, but the “greatest”? Nah. What show could make that claim?
Homicide was GREAT. But it was still restrained by network TV and its execs (and sometimes those executives wanted TPTB to add on prettier white cast members). All the folks behind the scenes will tell you that. The Wire was not restricted by HBO at all and as a result it ended up being a superior series.
The Shield was better. WAY better. Now that was a GREAT show. I tried watching The Wire once. I cut it off after 20 minutes.
If you cut off “The Wire” after 20 minutes, you’ve totally missed the point. “The Sheild” is like “The Wire”, except that the actings is not as good, the writing is not as good, and it’s usually enjoyed by people of really short attentions spans.
The Shield was better? OK, but it’s like choosing what diamonds to take home from the mine. I’ll put The Wire up against any hour drama in the history of television in the world. It’s damn good writing and well-rounded characters. ike anything else, people might just not get into it, but I don’t think the Shield was better.
I should back off, though, because I haven’t even watched an entire season of The Shield, but enough to compare a bit.
