Time Magazine Picks “The Princess And The Frog” As Best Movie Of The Year & Mo’Nique For Top Performance!

Say what?

I haven’t seen it yet, but Sergio has, and he gave it a thumbs up (read his review HERE). But the best film of the year? The highy influential Time magazine thinks so, with a top 10 list that includes films we’ve discussed or reviewed on this blog – The Hurt Locker (#4 on the list), Up In The Air (#5), A Single Man (#7), and District 9 (#9 on the list).

A bold pick by Time wouldn’t you say – to choose Disney’s first animated film to feature a black princess (even though she spends much of the movie as a frog) as its top film of the year? A selection that I’m sure will prove to be polarizing once the list is distributed widely.

Time also lists its top 10 performances of the year (regardless of gender), and guess who’s number 1? Mo’Nique for her work in Precious.

Apparently, Time is having a “black” year.

I’m sure some, if not all of us who regularly contribute to this site will eventually list our individual lists of our top films of the year. I still have to see a handful of films before creating mine, so you likely won’t see a list from me for another couple of weeks.

Here’s Time’s list of the top 10 movies of 2009:

1. The Princess and the Frog
2. Up
3. Fantastic Mr. Fox
4. The Hurt Locker
5. Up in the Air
6. The White Ribbon
7. A Single Man
8. Of Time and the City
9. District 9
10. Thirst

And here is it’s list of the top 10 movie performances:

1. Mo’nique as Mary Jones in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
2. Carey Mulligan as Jenny in An Education
3. Saoirse Ronan as Susie Salmon in The Lovely Bones
4. Meryl Streep as Julia Child in Julie & Julia
5. Marion Cotillard as Luisa Contini in Nine
6. Colin Firth as George in A Single Man
7. Jeremy Renner as Staff Sergeant William James in The Hurt Locker
8. George Clooney as Ryan Bingham in Up in the Air
9. Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds
10. Michael Jackson as Michael Jackson in Michael Jackson’s This Is It

I can’t get over the fact that people still think Mo’Nique’s performance is all that. I was just talking to a friend of mine last night who, like me, wasn’t that all impressed with her. First it’s REAL easy to play a such a vicious bad day on screen. And two, like we both agreed, if you’ve ever seen her stand up act, her performance in the Precious is EXACTLY THE SAME. Maybe a little bit more exaggerated, but the same exact loud, obnoxious, crude, person.

    • I agree with Sergio on this point. When the much touted monologue at the end came on, afterward, I thought, ‘really?’. Overall I like Mo’nique. I think she has what it takes but that part wasn’t a grand departure from what I’ve seen from her before.

        Sergio & Noelani,

        Q. Have you seen a better Female or male performance than the one Mo’Nique dives in the film?

        If so pray tell.

        • Uh yeah, quite a few. Two that instantly come to mind are from The Color Purple (and I use this one because some have been calling Precious, this generations TCP); Oprah Winfrey at the supper table with the family and Margaret Avery in the bathtub scene.

That film alone had a billion and one grand performances that were far more Oscar worthy than this one. Too bad that film got snubbed by the Academy Awards.

Anyway, that’s my opinion, I can’t speak for anyone else.

    • Speaking for myself and from those I’ve spoken to whove’ seen the film it wasn’t her performance throughout the film, which wasn’t exactly terrible, but the scen in Mariah Carey’s character’s office when you finally find yourself feeling emotional. She’s the last person you expected to take you to that tearful place (like you said, up until then, she just played a loathsome, bitch – and played it more than adequately) yet she’s the one, of all people, that gets you reaching for the kleenex.

It may be easy to play such a vicious bad day on screen (I don’t know) but turning it around like that is no mean feat.

    Film List
Seen all with the exception of Princess & Frog seeing this weekend.
Mull over this at weekend and get back as to my picks but there’ll be no Whit Ribbon.

    Some real bad calls.
Yes I have to agree Mo’Nique’s was the years best performnce that final 10 minutes whats saves Precious in my opinion.
No way that either Jackson or Streep (Well it’s the wrong film she’s much better in It’s Complicated). No Abby Cornish for Bright Star is wrong wrong wrong. Likewise Christoph Waltz’s performance should be a lot higher. He speaks German, French, English & Italian in the film. All equally good you’d be hard pressed to know what is his native tongue.

I meant “bad GUY” not “day”

I thought that Mariah Carey was better than Mo’Nique 1) because it was really good and 2) because it was totally unexpected from her of all people. Mo’Nique like I said was loud and crude and she’s like that most of time anyway so it wasn’t much of a stretch for her. Playing an one dimensional totally evil person isn’t that hard to do. Ask any actor. It’s the sutble shading you give between the lines that makes it something special and Mo’Nique doesn’t do that at all in the film. And name a better perforamnce, off the top of my head Nicholas Cage in the Bad Leiutentant. Mind blowing insane and compelling. The best he’s been in years

      Sergio,
      You cannot be serious.
Mariah better than Mo’Nique no, no, no. I won’t have it. To me it is Mariah’s best film performance but she appeared to me to be awkward.
As to Mr. Cage, yes it’s a good performance, yes, it’s probably his best since, well a long time. But Performance of the year. No, never.
May be 3 other performances could be said to be in the same ball park, this year. Clooney’s in Up in the Air, Abby Cornish in Brightstar & Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds.
Waltz & Mo’Nique were the years stand out performances for me.

michael jai white in black dynamite. = )
i wasn’t that impressed either sergio. i want to answer e forde’s question but i don’t think it was cleared up what exactly he means.

      Noelani, Sergio, MLM et al

My question is have you seen a better acting performance from anyone Male or Female this year (2009) than Mo’Nique’s in Precious?
