DIVERSIONS – Small Town Texas Cops Rob Out Of Town Black/Latino Drivers Of $3 MillionFrom last night’s AC360 (Sounds like piracy, doesn’t it?): The story begins… at least 150 drivers, all of them African American or Latino, have accused a small Texas town’s cops of pulling them over for minor infractions, and essentially rob them of whatever money they’re carrying, under the guise of false money-laundry charges. at some point news like this just stopped affecting me. i’m not surprised by things like this anymore. it’s good to get it all out so people know about it, but i just give a sigh and move on.
funny, your reference to piracy.
on a more serious note, one of the Texaco plaintiffs wrote a biography after the settlement and talked about her family driving down south when she was a little girl and her father being stopped by highway patrolmen and shaken down in a similar fashion.
This apparently has been going on for a very long time. I’m just surprised its only now coming to light.
Re: your story tonight on Highway Robbery. I have lived in Shelby County for 10+ years. This is not the first time the DA (Lynda K Russell) has covered up a story. She is crooked and so are most of the rest of Shelby County law enforcement. I am glad this story was brought to light. Something should be done about crooked public officials. They target Mexicans and Black Americans in Tenaha DAILY. It is not right. They think they can get away with it because Shelby County is just a tiny dot on the map. Come to town and bring with you the NAACP and the ACLU. The officials here are corrupt. They should be setting an example and here they are, stealing from honest citizens.
One final note: she just added an extra position for a relative that was released from prison recently. Her part-time position was mysteriously funded by the DA. Wonder where Mrs. Russell got the money? Bet that position won’t be open much longer now that she is writing checks to the motorists that were stolen from by Tenaha PD.

You act like that is something new. You should also check and see why the “DA, Susan Reed,” in San Antonio,Tx let the Sheriff, Ralph Lopez, off after he was found to be laundering money. She said they made an “agreement”. Yes he is still free, she is still the DA, never heard nothing about any charges being filed on him yet, they arrest and jail innocent individuals. A lot of people have been scarred for life by the charges against and the punishment sent down to them by this “strict” DA. Yet the Sheriff gets a free pass.
Well, why should we be surprized by this sort of irresponsible behavior on the part of these small town cops. C’mon now, since when does corruption become a shock to society when discussing a small town environment where the fox guards the hen-house.
Driving while Black or Latino is not going to simply disappear because a Black Man sits in the oval office!
These are attitudes that have been around since the beginning of time in America!
Now, the one thing that may curb this sort of rogue behavior is to send the offending officers to a place that would be their worst nightmare. Most cops would prefer waterboarding, the loss of all limbs, or worse, than to do time in a state prison.
Send these offenders (cops) and the DA to Rikers Island or its equal.
Follow up their incarceration a month or so down the road with a CNN crew to chronicle their lives.
I would definetly tune in!

She didn’t even get a dent on her car but they are saying my son “rammed” her car and the KXAN TV is calling it “Extreme Road Rage”. They didn’t even get my son’s side of the story!
I wish Gary Tuchman would look into Williamson County Sheriff’s actions against minorities because people around here know it happens but no one wants to talk about it probably because of ramifications. I don’t give a darn! They need to be investigated!
To mrs melendres your son followed the lady back to her home then hit her car this is road rage and he deserves jail time period this had nothing to do with race just a man who did not want to be honked at which should of stopped him from hitting the ladys car your link proves it along with the witness.williams county sheriff on this point did nothing wrong
This type of good ole boys police actions, judge actions da ect… is all over Texas, Arkansaw,Lousiana ect… has been happing for years and not just to the african and latino communities I am a White female and have had this happen to me 26 years ago in a judges jailhouse outside his own home, in ola tx, kaufman county texas i never have gone near the county since and I live in texas
