“21 Jump Street” Adaptation Gets Director

cast1So… it looks like the rumored 21 Jump Street movie adaptation is definitely a go, for better or for worse.

Columbia Pictures is negotiating with the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs helming team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct the filmed version of the TV series that launched Johnny Depp’s career – as well as Holly Robinson’s… even though, she’s pretty much faded into near-obscurity.

The film, about a group of baby-faced cops who go undercover at high schools, has been guided by comedian Jonah Hill, who promised “an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type… full-on action movie, blowing shit up.

Hill will also star in the film and exec produce. Although, I’m not sure which of the characters he’d play. He doesn’t quite match any of them. No word on who’ll play the characters originated by Holly Robinson and Steven Williams – the show’s 2 main black roles.

The series, which ran from 1987-1990, was an early hit for the Fox Network. I haven’t seen Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, but, it seems like quite a leap from that computer-animated film to a potentially high-profile, live-action feature in Jump Street.

Can’t say I’m thrilled about any of this, but maybe YOU are.

  • I fell in love with Holly Robinson back then, who if you remember sang that cheesy opening song, as well as a few other songs for the show.

Near-obscurity though? I dunno about that. She was the 1st and 2nd lead actor on two sitcoms since then, For Your Love and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, respectively, and does heaps of charity work along with her husband, ex-football player Rodney Peete, for autism and other causes including Hollywood based ones. She’s also raising 4 kids (not with ten nannies like the Jolie-Pitts) AND she’s going to be in the next Celebrity Apprentice with the recently “downtrodden S&A post” Sinbad. Busy lady.

I just hope they don’t offer her role to Zoe Saldana :)

I love Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and have watched it twice, but I have serious doubts about how those guys are gonna go from that to this. Especially with the king of bromance and “fart and balls” jokes Jonah Hill involved. Nonetheless, I’ll wait til I see the rest of the cast and the trailer before I make any further comment or turn any eyes sideways…
