Hey New Yorkers, See “Scream Blacula Scream” At MoMA TONIGHT!
Here’s a film I wouldn’t expect to see on the Museum of Modern Art’s film screening calendar; but here it is anyway – the 1973 blaxploitation classic, Scream Blacula Scream, the sequel to that other blaxploitation horror classic Blacula (1972), in which the titular dark prince of shadows (aka Dracula’s soul brother) is awakened by voodoo powers to stalk the earth once again, in a new quest for blood – this time, chasing after Pam Grier! What more do you need to know? Williams Marshall stars again, as he did in the first film. I’ve seen both, but on home video. MoMA is presenting the film on one of its lovely, theatrical screens, and I’d actually have gone to the screening if I didn’t have to be elsewhere at exactly the same time. So, if you’re in NYC, and available this evening, at 7PM, I suggest you run over to MoMA to see this on the big screen! Yes, it’s a blaxploitation flick; but it’s better than you probably think it is. Interestingly, it’s being shown In conjunction with the Tim Burton gallery and film exhibitions currently at MoMA. Apparently, the film was one of many that influenced, inspired, and intrigued Burton, and which reflect the motifs, themes, and sensibilities of his work. Here’s a trailer as a reminder:
