What’s Michael Dorn Been Up To Lately?

michael-dornI was researching for a future post and came across an item that reminded me of Michael Dorn – you know who he is… Worf from the long-running Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series (a show I was a big fan of, by the way).

I wondered what he’s been up to since that program went off the air in 1994. His IMDB resume shows that he’s done a lot of TV work, including voice-overs for several characters in animated series and movies. Of course, he’s appeared in each Next Gen film that’s been made since the show was nixed; I believe there’ve been at least 2 of them; and he’s had parts in a few indie flicks.

So, he’s certainly been working! However, I did wonder if his was an opportunity missed, in that, he could have been a bigger star than he currently is (assuming he’s even interested in being a bigger star). He’s got the physical assets – tall and somewhat imposing at 6 ft 3 inch, he’s a good-looking fellow, he’s obviously got the voice, and seems to have the charm to go along with all of that, based on interviews I’ve seen him in. And, from all I’ve seen of his work, while he’s not a theatre-trained thespian like his Star Trek co-star, Patrick Stewart, he can act.

I guess his visibility wasn’t helped much by the fact that he spent almost a decade playing the same character – a Klingon, which required that he be covered in heavy makeup, hiding his face.

But, I did wonder if he could have had an alternate career altogether, if circumstances where different. He’s 58 years old currently, so, he might be considered a little rusty by Hollywood’s standards.

Then again, I suppose one could argue that none of the cast members of the Star Trek: The Next Gen series have had much of what I’d call “high-profile” careers since the show ended, so why should he?

I think of him like another Dennis Haysbert who also had all those attributes you mention. He works but he’s never going to be as bog ad a Densely Washington for example.

  • Dorn did play the President on Heroes, so he shares that with Haysbert.

Tambay turns out to be another black person who apparently doesn’t know Deep Space Nine existed. Shame since it was a superior and more risk-taking show than TNG (which I liked as well…I loved both shows). Dorn spent four seasons on DS9 as well after TNG.

    • Yeah, I know he was on DS9 Mr Visitor. I watched Sisko and company, but not as religiously as I did TNG. I was all Star-Trekked out after 7 seasons of TNG, and never fully made the logical leap to DS9.

A lot of the Star Trek: TNG cast has favored voice acting (and with a voice like his, who can blame him?)since the end of that series. I’d imagine all of them have raked in a pretty penny from that show, and I know that Michael spends a great deal of time flying his planes, and his name pops up a lot in regards to air shows, even when he’s not expected.

He was on Without a Trace, and did a great job on that~

He was also in 5 Star Trek movies, one with the original cast, and the 4 TNG movies.

I believe Dorn has moved on to directing . I recall seeing his name on the credits of some show which I did not watch while flipping thru the channels. Tambay you owe it to yourself to see some of DS9 outstanding episodes particularly one I believe was called The Visitor.
