Where are they now? (Part 3)

And speaking of Spike, where is his sister Joie? You know, the one with the eyes? She had some prominent parts in his early films like Mo’ Better Blues and branched out doing supporting roles in Hollywood movies and co-wrote the screenplay for Crooklyn. But she sort of faded away too. Anybody out there has any info? I did come across some photos of her in the audience at a fashion show last October and she still looks great, but unfortunately she was wearing shades and I needed a photo to show those eyes.

  • I don’t know that I even want to find Joie Lee anywhere. I never really appreciated her talent as an actress. Her performances were generally pretty flat, much like Spike’s OWN performances. I’m glad Spike wised up and took himself AND his sister out of his movies.

Is this gonna be an all female where are they now?

  • Sergio

Nope. Not my intention. Men will be included as well

  • Chuckling at Accidental’s comments. Don’t worry, I’ll throw up a couple of dudes to balance Sergio out ;o)

Regarding Joie – She lives in Brooklyn where she runs some kind of after-school arts program. At least, that’s what I was told about a year ago. I’m not sure if she’s still doing that.

I’ve seen her around – mostly at events in which Spike is speaking or screening something, here in NYC.

She co-starred in a film called “Full Grown Men,” in 2006/2007 I believe. It spent more than a year and a half on the festival circuit and was on the verge of self-release when it won the audience award in the IndieWIRE and Sundance Channel’s Undiscovered Gems screening series in January 2008, awarding it a $100,000 distribution deal, including a theatrical release through Emerging Pictures and a run on the Sundance Channel.”

I haven’t seen the film. But now that you’ve helped me remember it, I’m going to look it up.

I’m not sure how much of a role she plays in it.

About two years ago I saw a short she wrote and directed…I forget the name. It was actually very good.

I found her and Spike most tolerable in Do the Right Thing. I thought Jolie was miscast in Mo Better Blues because it required more range than she had. Of course it did not help that her brother saddled her with a thankless role.

Still can’t believe Spike gave himself a prominent role in Malcolm X.

  • She rode her bike past me yesterday in Clinton Hill. She had her dog in the little basket on the handlebars…

  • Real talk? ALL the women were miscast in Mo Better Blues. I need a JJ Abrams remake of Mo Better Blues, for real.

Jwah (as it’s pronounced) works more than we realize. nobody saw her in Law & Order? “She Hate Me” was the latest Spike Lee joint she was in. Plus, since she co-wrote (or was it wrote) “Crooklyn”, I’m sure she’s doing well for herself.

As someone who works with his sister, I can relate to how Spike put Joie on. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s involved in the ad agency somehow.
