August Wilson’s “Fences” Wins Big At The Tony Awards!

1.152697Congratulations to both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis for winning the Tony Awards for Best Performance by a Leading Actor & Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play, for their work in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Fences.

And to top it all off, Fences won the Tony Award for Best Revival of A Play.

By the way, this was Denzel’s first Tony Award win. Viola already has 1 of her own.

And with all that gold, a movie adaptation of the play is almost certainly assured now, I’d say. Although, I’m not sure if a direct translation from stage to screen would work.

Fela! also picked up a couple of trophies – one for Best Choreography In A Musical, and another for Best Costume Design of A Musical. It was edged out by rock-and-roll miscegenation drama, Memphis, in the Best Musical category – an award many hoped it would win. Of course we already know that a Fela biopic is currently in the works, with Steve McQueen directing, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Congrats to all the winners. See the full list HERE.

is soooo sad that Fela did not win for Best Musical . . . totally deserved it!

Not only is this Denzel’s first Tony Award win but it is his first and only Tony nomination.

Fantastic news to wake up to, thanks for posting. NYC papers don’t even have photos of these two on the front page, Viola looks amazing. and yeah agreed Fela was robbed, but reallly looking forward to the film.

  • All in all, it was a good night. Too bad Stephen McKinley Henderson or David Alan Grier didn’t win for Best Featured Actor. What was really good was the amount of African Americans nominated across the board. From the acting categories for Play and Musical – Revival or New Work, to Directing, Choreography, and Producing, there were a substantial amount of black faces. That makes it a great night.
