“Will Smith Look-Alike” Wins 2010 African Performance Playwriting Competition

100804124212_deborah_asiimwe_226x283_nocreditNobel Laureate Wole Soyinka judged the 2010 African Performance Playwriting Competition for the BBC (its 50th year).

In short, writers were asked to submit a 30-minute drama with six characters or less. Plays that made it through to the final shortlist were all read by Professor Soyinka, who then picked a winner to be paid a rights fee of as much as £1000 ($1600), and also have their play produced and aired on the BBC World Service.

This year’s winner is Deborah Asiimwe from Uganda (pictured on the left). Her play Will Smith Look-Alike, tells the story of 17-year-old Tereka, who sneaks his way into New York City (from Uganda), with dreams of meeting his idol, and perceived look-alike (Will Smith), only to find that America isn’t the place he expected it would be.

First, watch Soyinka talk about the process by which the winner was selected; and underneath, listen to the full 30-minute production of the play that aired on BBC.
