Trailer – “13″ (50 Cent, Mickey Rourke & Jason Statham Play Russian Roulette)

I thought we’d profiled this flick previously, but I didn’t immediately find any posts about it here, so this might be the first.

In short, it’s called 13, a remake of the 2006 French film of the same name, which I saw and liked! An minimalist, black and white, atmospheric, tense thriller that maybe owes more to its execution than its story; though a pretty good debut for Géla Babluani, the young French filmmaker of the original, who also wrote and directed this remake.

The film stars Sam Riley, 50 Cent, Mickey RourkeJason Statham and Ray Winstone. It was actually shot over a year ago, but, for reasons unknown to me at the moment, it’s been sitting around for some time. Maybe it sucks?? :)

Babluani said in a past interview that he changed quite a bit of the story for the remake, because he didn’t want to just reshoot his original in English. Whether the remake is better for it, no one knows so far, because, again, it hasn’t been released yet. IMDB has a 2010 release date, but I don’t think that’s happening. The film’s Wikipedia page says it’ll debut at SXSW in 2011, which is next March. But I haven’t been able to confirm that.

So, really, as of right now, the project is stuck somewhere in Limbo, which is often a bad sign.

A couple of months ago, the only available look at the film was a Russian-language trailer that got passed around the web, and it wasn’t subtitled. I dug up the below English-language trailer from the finance/production/distribution company’s website (Magnet Media), and I believe it’s the only one available at the moment.

Its synopsis: A naive young man assumes a dead man’s identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed doors on the lives of other men.

Here’s the English-language trailer of the remake, and underneath that, for comparison, is the trailer for the original 2006 film:

  • I enjoyed the original also. But wasn’t there a British remake that was made also? I remember seeing another movie that used the same concept.

  • Sergio

The fact that Paramount Vantage is handling it is NOT good news. It used to be Paramount “prestige” distrib arm and it’s the place were the studio now dumps its movie that they have no clue what do to with. Like for example, that film Middle Men with Luke Wilson that came and disappeared without a trace this past summer. Actually a pretty good movie that the studio was dumbstruck about how to market.

  • I like the simplicity of the trailer for the original better. I like that you don’t know where this is going. I have not seen the original, but now I’m in! I recall hearing the name before.

The remake could be good as well, but already I feel like they’ll probably give the story and characters a Hollywood angle. Well, now I’ve got one more thing to watch!
