Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees Announced & It’s Less “Colorful” Than The Golden Globes

The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.

Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.

The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.

But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.

Here’s the full list:

Why weren’t any of the For Colored Girls” cast nominated?? I know there’s critical disdain for Perry’s works in the industry but there were some great performances in this movie…Tambay why do you think that is? I think it’s a shame that these actresses bust their butts and got no recognition. Why?

    • ska-triumph

And I forgot to mention FCG, so thank you for that. Yes, the film was “saved” by most of the performances but Perry, Lionsgate & co must’ve known how jam-packed the female performances were this year BEFORE pushing up the original release date to November. Shame on them: aside from the discourse around the film & source material, this was dropped per wide release competing with UNSTOPPABLE among others. Loss of attention & b.o. revenue, just to get in the race.

      • Zeus

Further proving that Perry needs to stick with his usual formula of releasing his movies on a weekend when NO other big budget, highly anticipated releases are coming out. Stick to February and March.

He can’t compete with the “big boys” no matter how hard he tries (and claims he’s not trying to).

  • Savannah

aside from the melonin deficient list of sag nominees, wasn’t 2010 a little lackluster in the movie department? or is it just me? inception and black swan=yes. but other than that, i struggle to pin point any major releases that really made an impression.

  • ska-triumph

Wow. So Ms. Swank was snuck in with CONVICTION (over Halle & Julianne?) and no spot for Sam Rockwell (over Renner/THE TOWN)? Hmmmm. As for the top pic choices, I concur: I’ve seen them all & there is incredible variety. All solid in their own right. Look forward to S&A’s insights, should you want to share them.

  • Terrance

I think Renner deserved his nomination. He was the best thing about The Town. But then again I haven’t seen Conviction, and Sam Rockwell is long overdue

  • Grace

Even though the Boxing universe is dominated by black and latino men — colored people — Hollywood stays addicted to the fantasy of the white heroic fighter. I hear Emninem is gonna star in a movie as a fighter. Think a script about a african-american, puerto rican, dominican, ghanian, or phillipino fighter could ever get greenlit? No? Too unreal huh — doesn’t depict reality. *sigh* Hollywood.

  • Grace

Why is Michael Kenneth Williams’ name missing from Boardwalk Empire ensemble?!!! That has got to be a typo!!! He’s a main character!!!! And he’s on screen more than Paul Sparks!! Okay. *counts to ten* This is just a typo. I mean…

  • Jeremy

I was just about to go off on the same subject! was there not a “show-stealing” actor cast in this show??? or am i imagining thing in my “perfect world” where black actors get their props?

  • Zeus

    Michael K. Williams got robbed.

  • This is a more respectable batch of nominations. No crap here like Burlesque and The Tourist for Best Picture and no Halle Berry. I think the HFPA’s nominated them for ratings.

I’m happy and relieved to see Hilary Swank taking Halle Berry’s spot because this will definitely hurt her Oscar chances. I would rather have a colorless group of nominees than to see her nominated for turning in mediocre work and doing her -black when convenient- thing again. Im still in shock that The Hollywood Reporter had the nerve to put her on their Legendary Cover with Sidney Poitier. The nerve of those people to even insinuate that she’s a legend. SMH What a joke.

    • Zeus

LOL!! She doesn’t need this! Golden Globe nom is plenty.

And frankly, if she wins nothing I’m cool. She is still a millionaire working actress who is still VERY MUCH in demand. A sista who is loved by women and especially by men and YOU’RE NOT. :)
