Watch Trailer For OWN Network Documentary “Louder Than A Bomb”
That’s what Oprah Winfrey said during an OWN launch party at Sundance Film Festival this weekend.
“My goal, my dream, my intention is to bring documentaries into the mainstream, to have them stimulate new ways of thinking .”
She went on to say celebrity Rosie O’Donnell will be OWN‘s “curator” of non-fiction films. O’Donnell will host specials in which the films’ makers and subjects are featured when the OWN Documentary Film Club launches this spring. Forest Whitaker and Barbara Kopple have already begun working on documentaries for the network.
We’ve discussed one of the newly acquired docs, Family Affair, here. Now, we’d like to profile Louder Than A Bomb.
From the film’s website:
Every year, more than six hundred teenagers from over sixty Chicago area schools gather for the world’s largest youth poetry slam, a competition known as “Louder Than a Bomb”. Founded in 2001, Louder Than a Bomb is the only event of its kind in the country—a youth poetry slam built from the beginning around teams. Rather than emphasize individual poets and performances, the structure of Louder Than a Bomb demands that kids work collaboratively with their peers, presenting, critiquing, and rewriting their pieces. To succeed, teams have to create an environment of mutual trust and support. For many kids, being a part of such an environment—in an academic context—is life-changing. LOUDER THAN A BOMB chronicles the stereotype-confounding stories of four teams as they prepare for and compete in the 2008 event.
Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel, of the Chicago-based production team Siskel/Jacobs Productions, are the film’s producers and directors.
The film is set to make it’s theatrical debut at the Gene Siskel Film Center, in Chicago, on February 4, 2011. To learn more about the film and upcoming theater dates, check out the film’s website. Below is the trailer.
