Film Finds – Happily Ever After: A Positive Image of Black MarriageLike CNN’s questionable Black In America series, I’m sometimes ambivalent about films like these that I think imply some singular, monolithic experience. To be sure, the intent is certainly noble and worthy of commendation, and I’m certainly open to being convinced otherwise, which I suppose won’t happen until I actually see the film. Maybe I too have been temporarily seduced by that mythical, Utopian, post-racial world we’ve all been hearing about. The doc is billed as a film set to “challenge negative stereotypes and portrayals of marriage and parenting in the African American community.”
A DVD release date is set for late July 2009. Visit the film’s website to stay informed of its progress at: http://www.happilyeverafterthemovie.com/. This kind of project is long overdue and it’s a shame that it’ll only get viewed via DVD.
Only saw bits of the CNN Black in America series online but from what I can remember they seemed to spend a great deal of time focusing on mixed race relationships and being single… almost as if those were the only options open to black people (especially women). Mind you, I don’t live in America but if often feels that way.
And is it just me, or did this remind you of Beautiful Things?
GOOD GOD!!!
Are my ears decieving me deceiving or is that Nicole Renee singing in the trailer???
PLEASE let me know….
I wouldn’t know… but once I find out, I’ll let you know.
This looks really really good. It’s nice to see a film like this that’s reflecting a truth that is hardly shown or explored in mainstream cinema; especially in documentaries. Usually we only get the negative side of things.
It’s also great to see adult discussing this issue. People that actually have children and are living in the day-to-day world, not some celebrity based fantasy or unrelatable psycho-babble.
This is a good idea, and I wish Tyler New Media all the best, but the problem is that most negative images are in dramatic films, not documentaries.
Maybe this will inspire someone to write a script with a successful married couple as the main characters.
I would be very interested in seeing this film.
