Shadow And Act on Facebook

Sister Beyoncé

The UK Daily Mail is reporting that representatives for Beyoncé have approached Disney Pictures to persuade them into developing the current London West End musical hit, Sister Act into a feature film project  for her.

The musical, which was a huge hit for Whoopi Goldberg and Disney in 1992, deals with a lounge singer on the run from gangsters who disguises herself as a nun and hides out in a convent.

The Daily Mail is also reporting that they are thinking of approaching Meryl Streep as well, for the role of Mother Superior.

Hmmmmm… Beyoncé and Streep. You think Disney is going to pass this one up? They probably already have the one sheets already in mind. And granted, even though it’s yet another remake, this project seems suited more to Beyonce’s talents. It’s not like she doing a biopic of Harriet Tubman or a film version of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage.

Though one hopes that this time Beyoncé takes some elocution lessons before starting on this film…

  • Beyonce and Streep…? The child has balls, I’ll give her that.

  • As you said, it’s more up her alley than say the Angela Davis biopic that was rumored to be in the works some time ago *shudder*.

I won’t be surprised to see it happen. After the success of Obsessed, she’s made it easier for any studio to say “yes” to the whatever she does next. And we all know how the studios looooove remakes – especially remakes of films that were once successes.

I could see Meryl Streep doing it – even though it’ll be with Beyonce. I think it depends on who the surrounding cast are, and more importantly, who the writer and director are. If the other elements are to her liking, I think she’ll do it.

Will I see it? Likely not…

A Sister Act remake already? Man I’m getting old. Sister Act II with L Boogie will always be a classic. As I’ve stated many times, “Beyonce, do us all a HUGE favor…stay the hell away from any and all film sets! If you happen upon a film set, quickly excuse yourself and run for the hills”.

    • I’d agree with you when it comes to Beyonce and film sets, however, she seems to have done OK in movies that involve singing, and in comedies (Austin Powers, Pink Panther and um… Obsessed).

As long as she realises her limitations (the choice of Sister Act would suggest maybe she does), then I think she could be warbling on celluloid for a while yet. I wouldn’t hold my breath on the acting though.

And don’t forget that Streep was in last year’s musical Mamma Mia which grossed over $600 million worldwide. I’ll be honest. If I was a Disney production exec I would fast track this project ASAP.

On one condition though that Beyonce takes speech lessons before production. It’s “with you” not “witchoo”.

I agree with you Sergio. It’s a money-maker and if “Obsessed” with the bad diction and stale, cardboard acting can gross monies like crazy, I can see execs wanting to pursue this venture. She’s the power to put butts into seats…but please dear GOD, fix that bad diction. I cannot believe… I mean, I’m from Texas and I DO NOT SPEAK LIKE THIS. It’s just…it’s sad. Beyonce please take some lessons; improve your ’slow-roll, stank-ghetto diction’. :( It’s sad. She’s an international mogul superstar entertainer yet speaks like she’s ‘fiddling’ Dixie…or whatever the saying says. I wonder how Whoopie will feel about this?

    Phluck that.

If they want Streep for the role, then cast VIOLA DAVIS \’coz she\’d be awesome! Let\’s pair those two together again. But they won\’t; \’coz it won\’t make money…but then again, maybe it would ;)

You can’t do a remake with different people IT DOESN’T WORK……….. I love Meryl really I do and I think maybe she’s smart enough to see that… If there’s going to be a sister Act 3 it has to be whoopi that does it or don’t make it at all…

    • Sounds like you mean sequel rather than remake.

For me, it just seems too soon for a remake. However, I guess it could work for a younger generation who haven’t given the original(s) a look-in… and with Streep playing, it could even draw an older (and mostly female) crowd in too.

  • The wheel is already round and can be attached to things. there’s no new way to do it. Let’s just quickly get Obsessed 2 on the rails and ready to go.

I would actually like to see Beyonce work with Guy Ritchie. I think that would be an ultimate test for her. He is so far the only director to pull an ACTING performance out of Jason Statham, so he may be just what Beyonce needs.

This subject about a non-actress’ plea to do a remake of a so-so movie franchise that is not even 20 years old gets more responses than the vast majority of topics the past few weeks? And the film will be a Disney movie to boot. Woe the state of black cinema.

      this made me chuckle.

    • LOL. AV, please feel free to go back and leave a comment on all past posts rather than add to what so obviously irks you.

      :P

Yes, it is sad, but this is the state of affairs shaping commercial black cinema – non-actresses doing remakes of not particularly great films that are barely 20 years old. It’s bound to elicit comment.

Oh, God this makes me sad! An amazing young and beautiful talent by the name of Patina Miller is doing sister act in London. An guess what she can act and sing. But its about butts in seats! So they will let Beyonce be really BAD in yet another film.

Here\’s Patina singing along with Shana Steele a song by new theatrical composers Pasek and Paul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks_m-dZVuzY
