Weekend B.O.

It was a neck and neck race this week, but Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs edged out Transformers 2 which dropped over 60% at the box office this week. Michael Mann’s Public Enemies had a strong showing to the relief of Mann and Universal Pictures. But the real surprise is The Hangover. With over $200 million so far, and a lot left to go, it’ll gross more than Star Trek and will be considered the bigger hit since it cost only $25 million to make. A lot for you and me, but a pittance for a Hollywood studio

The rest below.

  • Yeah there was sorta no way for Transformers to keep up that kind of momentum. This will pretty much guarantee a third movie, though.

Ice Age may be a bigger hit than we realize, because, has anyone here without kids seen any promotion for this picture? I haven’t even seen trailers anywhere but on Nick and Cartoon Network. Fox may have found a great way to ptomote using existing channels.

Or, maybe the falloff of Transformers was so big that anything new would have taken #1 this week. Yeah, I’ll roll with that.

  • Damn… I was hoping negative word of mouth would really hurt “Transformers.” I guess not… $42 million is a lot for a second week.

Meanwhile, “Pelham 123″ hasn’t done as well as expected.

Bruno opens this week, so I’m guessing it’ll be number 1.

I\’m mad that Trans2 has had such negative reviews and such. I mean, I\’m willing to shirk Michael Bay and his production steeze for my Starscream and Megatron; but I was told by many friends that it was cheesy and too kiddy…and of course there\’s the discussions online about the jigging, shucking and jiving. I\’m just :( about it because I really wanted it to be good and I really wanted to see it. But a friend of mine, die-hard 80s cartoon nutzoid who failed to see the shortcomings of the first feature (because his stan-ism is just that \’skrong\’), well even HE told me it was bad… *weeps* I wanted it to be great; I really did. *crosses fingers for GIJoe* :)

  • I saw Transformers over the weekend and I liked it!
