Watch The First 8 Minutes of The Hurt LockerI saw it on opening weekend, but never got around to writing a review. My reaction right after seeing it then was that it was the best film I’d seen all year! Today, after letting it sit in my head for 2 weeks, I can still say that it’s the best film I’ve seen all year; BUT, I realize that saying so isn’t entirely congratulatory, because I’ve seen roughly 6 films in theatres this year, and most of them have ranged from shit to average. The Hurt Locker isn’t a perfect film. Its flaws become more evident the more I ponder it. BUT, I can still say that it’s a good movie, and worth your $12. Or maybe I should rephrase that and say that it’s the best STUDIO picture I’ve seen all year. Anthony Mackie co-stars, and features quite prominently throughout. Even better, he doesn’t fall victim to the well-observed “black man in action movie syndrome” – he doesn’t get killed! I hope that’s not a spoiler. Anywho, courtesy of Hulu.com, here are the film’s first 8 minutes, which should give you some idea of what you can expect, for those who haven’t seen it yet (feel free to expand the viewing window to full screen), after the break:

I hate Hulu… but only because I can’t watch it from the UK.
You’d think that in 2009, any content on the web would be accessible by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
There are all these rights issues – Hulu probably has the right to make the footage available in the USA, and nowhere else. So I say, hate the studio system.

Nope. Ain’t going to do it. I’ve been waiting for this film for almost a year and it finally opens in my area on Friday. As does “Moon” too which I’ve also been dying to see. So thanks for the link, Tambay, but I’m going to hold off. I want everything to be completely new for me when I see this in the theaters this weekend.
