District 9 Oscar Bound?First, there’s been talk of a sequel; now, I’m reading about the film’s Academy Award potential. I’ve already shared my thoughts on D9, and I’m sure you can guess what my thoughts are on it winning, or even being nominated for any Oscars. In what categories exactly would the Academy consider it? At best, maybe Best Original Screenplay? Although, director Neill Blomkamp himself stated that there really wasn’t even a screenplay written for the film – more like an outline of events which were filled in while on set, in order to reflect the kind of realism we see in the end product. What else? Special Effects? I think we’ve seen, and will likely see, better effects work in other effects-laden films this year. Best Director? Best Picture? Best Actor? Can’t see it in any of those either. Apparently, the film was screened for the Academy over the weekend at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in L.A., and, according to Variety’s Peter Bart, the screening room was packed, and, as he states, “the film received the most applause of any movie in a couple of years. That’s usually a signal.” Ok… we’ll see! 3 comments to District 9 Oscar Bound? |

This will not end well.
I get the feeling you are dubious about D9 winning (or even to deserving to win) any oscars. you may be right. my predictive track record is very low in that arena. but since, i think, most (if not ALL) of that event is a testament to advertising, sentiment and connections, as opposed to artistic quality, i don’t feel to bad that i can’t read the tea leaves. although the increased number of nominations may change the math, i have no reason to hope that merit will figure in a whole lot more. that said, i certainly wouldn’t mind seeing D9 get some nominations, at the very least. i found it one of the most accomplished films of the past year. a great thrill ride that also had brains and heart. a real pleasure. i can’t wait for the sequel.
Here’s my first time commenting on this film. I saw it and to be quite frank, I found it boring. I fell asleep part way through. I can’t even tell you how it ended.
Oh well, wouldn’t be the first snoozer to get lavished with Academy Awards.
