Australian political thriller series Black B*tch, starring The Sapphires and Cleverman‘s Deborah Mailman and Brothers & Sisters‘ Rachel Griffiths has been picked up by Keshet International. According to Deadline, Keshet will partner with Endeavor Content to distribute the series to America.

The series is described as “a story of high stakes ambition, betrayal and treachery, played out in Australia’s capital.” Mailman plays Alex Irving, an Indigenous woman who becomes a national figure after she is appointed to the country’s senate by Prime Minister Rachel Anderson (Griffiths). The appointment is largely political, with Rachel wanting to bring her party some good publicity. But Alex wants to use her new job as a way to actually make a difference in her community and the country. However, once Rachel betrays her, Alex begins her plan for political revenge. The series will air on Australia’s ABC.

According to Deadline, Keshet’s Managing Director of Global Content Sebastian Burkhardt said of the show, “Black B*tch is a strong local story with the potential to resonate and connect with audiences around the wrold, which is why it immediately stood out to us.”

“Following on from our previous successes Redfern Now and Cleverman ABC Indigenous continues its strategy to redefine how Indigenous people see themselves on the screen, with the impressive Black B*tch,” added Kelrick Martin, ABC’s Head of Indigenous.

The six-part series is directed by Rachel Perkins (Mystery Road) and executive produced by Griffiths. Daren Dale and Miranda Dear of Blackfella Films are also on as producers.
