Artists from Kendrick Lamar to Erykah Badu have relied on Thundercat to bring his signature cool to their music for the last few years. This year, Thundercat is back with a new album, Drunk, out on February 24.

Out today is the album’s first single, “Show You the Way.” Although serial Thundercat collaborators Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and Wiz Khalifa will be on Drunk, they aren’t featured on “Show You the Way.” Instead, Thundercat teams up with two legends, and two of his heroes, Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald.

“Kenny Loggins is the one. He’s the guy. He gets it,” Thudercat said in an interview with Red Bull Music Academy Daily. He couldn’t believe his luck when Loggins reached out to him; Loggins initially thought he had been joking about being a fan. Once they began working together, Loggins invited McDonald aboard, and Thundercat found himself overwhelmed, “[McDonald] would send me a voice memo, and I would break down crying.”

Together, the three created a song that Thundercat describes as being about “going down the rabbit hole, taking you to another place…the experience that I’ve had growing up with friends and people that I’ve been around where it’s inviting them into where I come from emotionally. Sometimes it’s a pretty intense thing. The point is how weird things can get.”

As we’d expect from Thundercat, traveling with him to that place it is a little unexpected, but it’s also a smooth, fun ride.
