Ice Cube’s updated take on  Charles Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol, which has been in development for some time, has been picked up by Netflix as an original.

The rapper-turned-actor produces and will star as the film’s Scrooge-like character, a real estate mogul who is haunted by the three ghosts of Christmas to change his ways.

Originally the film was set to be produced by Universal and directed by Tim Story. In 2015, four studios were battling to pick it up, Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, Story is no longer attached to the project, and with Netflix, the film is currently being rewritten extensively by Matt Ember and Tom Astle. Tom Gardner, who worked with Netflx on the Marlon Wayans film, Naked, is producing with Ice Cube.

Also, this isn’t the only Ice Cube-Charles Dickens film in the works. As of 2017, the rapper was reported to team up with Broadway’s Hamilton director Tommy Kail to create a modern adaptation of Oliver Twist, the story of a poor orphan who goes from the workhouse to a gang of kid pickpockets, led by the criminally-minded Fagin (who would be played by Ice Cube). Disney was last attached to the project, which would be a musical combining various genres including hip-hop. Aside from starring in the film, Ice Cube would also produce the film through is CubeVision production company. Marc Platt (Broadway’s Wicked) and Jeff Kwatinetz are also on as producers.
