Janelle Monae as Mary Jackson in “Hidden Figures” (2016)

She appeared in two of 2016’s most significant films (although they continue to perform in 2017) – “Moonlight” and “Hidden Figures” – and now Janelle Monáe looks to build on those successes booking a co-starring role in director Robert Zemeckis’ scripted feature film adaptation of the 2010 documentary “Marwencol” which explores the life and work of artist and photographer Mark Hogancamp, who created a minature toy town in his garden to help him recover from a coma after being violently attacked.

Universal Studios is backing the project which will star Steve Carrell as Hogancamp.

Also attached is Leslie Mann, although no word on what roles she and Monáe have signed up to play.

Zemeckis’ Universal-based ImageMovers will produce alongside Cherylanne Martin. Jeff Malmberg, who directed the 2010 documentary the film is based on, will executive produce with Jackie Levine.

Maradith Frenkel, and Chloe Yellin are overseeing the project for Universal.

Monáe is represented by Wondaland Management and WME.
