Jason George has been cast in the upcoming, untitled fire department spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy.

He’ll be joining as series regular, joining a cast which already includes Jaina Lee Ortiz, who will topline the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who reported the news, George will continue to be a series regular on Grey’s Anatomy until the new series premieres, but after that he will focus on the new show. Their report notes that, “The casting does not mean he will not continue to pop in and out of the flagship series.”

At first it was announced that no Grey’s cast members would be joining the spinoff, but now it seems, at least in George’s situation, that’s not the case anymore.

Shonda Rhimes will executive produce with her Shondaland partner, Betsy Beers. Paris Barclay is the show’s he producing director and an executive producer. Paris Barclay will be producing director and an executive producer.

The spinoff follows a group of heroic firefighters, from the captain to the newest recruit, as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock. It was first picked up in May on a straight-to-series order for ABC.

George has been with Grey’s since 2010, portraying Dr. Benjamin Warren. This will be his third Shondaland drama, as he also starred in the short-lived, Off the Map. His other notable credits include the film Barbershop, the TV series, Eve, and ABC’s Mistresses.
