Lovecraft Country‘s fifth episode, “Strange Case,” was one of the series’ wildest yet. The episode featured Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku) transforming into a white woman in order to live out her dreams of being “Ruby, uninterrupted.” Also, William (Jordan Patrick Smith) was revealed to be Christina (Abbey Lee), finally putting end to the mystery behind the weird blonds. But what viewers might not know is that in the book, Christina doesn’t exist.

As fans of the show who have read the book know,  Lovecraft Country chose to turn one of the book’s characters, Caleb Braithwaite, into Christina, giving the show an extra layer of depth. In the book, Caleb and Ruby are in a relationship similar to the one shown on-screen, in which Caleb brings Ruby access to magic in exchange for completing tasks to help him seize control over the Sons of Adam. But in the book, Caleb and William are two separate people, with William being Caleb’s manservant.

By connecting William and Christina together, the show seems to be making a play at tackling America’s obsession with white patriarchy. The only way Christina would be able to take control over the Sons of Adam, of course, would be to masquerade as a man. There could also be some commentary on sexuality in the 1950s, particularly how queer people couldn’t openly be themselves.

There are tons of secrets left in Lovecraft Country, but we can count part of the mystery surrounding Christina and William solved–at least for now.
