Lynn Whitfield is the latest person to join the cast of Netflix’s Nappily Ever After, joining Sanaa Lathan and Ernie Hudson.

The film will follow “a woman named Violet (Lathan) with a seemingly flawless life — a great job, a handsome boyfriend who’s a doctor, and a meticulously maintained coiffure. But after an accident at the hair salon, each of these things starts to unravel, and Violet begins to realize that she was living the life she thought she was supposed to live, not the one that she really wanted. She starts to put the pieces back together with a little help from a soulful barber and his young daughter. Violet finds the courage to cast off some of the things that she didn’t really need, starting with the perfectly straightened hair, and find a life that has real meaning.”

According to Deadline, Whitfield will portray Violet’s mother, Paulette.

Haifaa Al-Mansour is directing and it will be produced by Southside with You producer Tracey Bing with Lathan, Jared Leboff and Marc Platt. It is yet another collaboration from Lathan and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who contributed rewrites to Tina Chism’s script.

For those who may remember, nearly 10 years ago, Halle Berry was attached to star in an adaptation of this novel.

Whitfield currently stars on OWN’s Greenleaf.

Production on Nappily Ever After starts next month in Atlanta.
