Method Man recently sat down with Kevin Hart on his Gold Minds podcast, where he opened up about the mental health lessons he’s learned along the way to improve his well-being. “I was my own shadow, meaning I was in my own way. I had to get out of my own way. I saw that I could not control the people around me, but I could control myself,” the former Wu-Tang Clan member told Hart. “One thing that stood out for me, when I was younger – basically being a little dirty kid with nothing, no control over where I lived, what I ate, where I slept. But I had these sports – football and lacrosse – there I had control and I was good at it.”

Similarly, he is now focused on the things he can control in his own life. “I had to look myself in the mirror and say, ‘I’m tired of myself. I want better for me, I have more to contribute, and start there,'” he continued on the Gold Minds podcast. “Self-check, absolutely. If you don’t, sooner or later, somebody else is gonna check you.”

The Grammy-winning artist is currently playing attorney Davis MacLean in STARZ’s Power Book II: Ghost. Speaking to Vibe exclusively in March, Method Man said he would like to see his character’s personal life further explored due to his decisions often being misunderstood by viewers. “They think that he’s motivated by money, but anybody can make money in this world,” he told the music outlet. “I think Davis is more motivated by power, no pun intended, and he will get it at any cost, whatsoever. And I’m a firm believer in people spend money to stay in power, so he’s willing to do that as well.”

The 52-year-old music veteran has also appeared in television shows OzThe WireLaw & Order: Special Victims UnitBlue Bloods, and The Deuce.

In addition to the iconic hits he’s created with Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man has enjoyed a successful solo career, beginning with his 1994 debut studio album, Tical, which birthed the hit single “All I Need,” which, of course, was made even more popular with a remix featuring Mary J. Blige. Their duet won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group in 1995.

Last year, Method Man shared plans to join forces with his eldest son, Sha Smith, whose stage name is PXWER, for a rap album in the near future. We can’t wait to hear it!
