In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Shonda Rhimes isn’t holding back on critiquing the Emmys.

Though nominated three times, Rhimes has yet to win an Emmy. So on Sunday, she saw Riz Ahmed, Donald Glover and Lena Waithe make history in winning their awards. But to Rhimes, while all these wins are historic, it is still bittersweet.

She said: “It’s embarrassing, frankly. To me, it feels embarrassing that we are still in a place in which we still have to note these moments. . . . I’m hoping that it’s not a trend. I’m hoping that people don’t feel satisfied because they saw a lot of people win, and then think that we’re done.”

Rhimes went on to speak about bucking the trend of not having flawed female characters and fighting for them. “We did that and it works, so I don’t get asked that question anymore. And when they do ask that question, I feel very comfortable saying you’re wrong—and that usually ends the conversation,” she said.
