Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo has set her next role. She’s been tapped to star in Universal’s upcoming musical drama, Talent Show.

The film has Gandja Monteiro attached to direct. It is based on an idea by Duane Adler, the writer behind the Save the Last Dance and Step Up.

Talent Show will center on Erivo’s character,  a “failed songwriter who returns home to Chicago to lead a group of at-risk youth in their annual talent show.” Lena Waithe wrote the most recent version of the script, with prior drafts by Aimee Lagos and Adler.

George Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel will produce through State Street Pictures. Waithe is exec producing through her Hillman Grad Productions and Jay Marcus is as well, via State Street.

Erik Baiers and Sara Scott are overseeing the project for Universal, while Marcus will oversee for State Street and Rishi Rajani will do so for Hillman Grad.
