This “back-to-school” PSA provides a haunting and sobering message about the ever-present threat of school shootings.
The nonprofit Sandy Hook Promise released the PSA, called “Back-To-School Essentials,” which features children talking about the new school supplies their parents have bought them for the new year. Very quickly, the narrative takes a turn as the usual “back-to-school” message gives way to the horrors of living through a school shooting.
According to CNN, the PSA “fits Sandy Hook Promise’s mission to empower America’s school kids with tools so they can look after themselves and their peers.”
Sandy Hook Promise’s managing editor Nicole Hockley told CNN that despite the fact that recent shootings in California, Ohio and Texas haven’t compelled Congress to act–a universal background check bill has been stalled in the Senate–she said that she still has hope.
“I always have hope,” she said, herself a survivor of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Conn., after her six-year-old son Dylan was killed. “I absolutely know that we can prevent this. I know we can stem this tide. We just need to keep chipping away.”
